STEP Grant To Help Enforce Driving
Violations
The Macomb Police Department would like to announce that the
Illinois Department of Transportation has awarded a Sustained
Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant to the Macomb Police
Department for the second year in a row. The time frame of the
grant begins October 1, 2011 and ends September 30, 2012.
The purpose of the Sustained Traffic Enforcement
Program is to reduce the number of motor vehicle crashes, accident
injuries, and accident fatalities through increased and highly
visible enforcement of occupant restraint requirements, impaired
driving, speeding , pedestrian safety, motorcycle licensing, and
registration laws during the national and state enforcement
campaigns. Throughout the next 12 months officers from the
Macomb Police Department will be conducting special traffic details
with emphasis on enforcing STEP traffic violations. Special
enforcement will be made around certain holidays throughout the
year.
The Macomb Police Department is dedicated to the
safety of our community. Details as such are designed to
increase the awareness of traffic safety in our community and to
gain voluntary compliance with the motoring public. The
increased enforcement details conducted in the next 12 months raise
the perception of getting caught and deters potential impaired
drivers and potential unrestrained vehicle occupants. The
combined impaired driving and safety belt enforcement details will
make further positive impact on reducing serious injuries and
fatalities on our streets.

Man With A Gun Complaint Leads to 2
Arrests
On October 4, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. officers from the
Macomb Police Department responded to a man with a gun incident at
527 E. Calhoun St. The initial complaint stated that a white
male subject was on the porch roof of the residence displaying a
weapon he said was loaded and that he was possibly under the
influence of methamphetamine. According to the complainant the
white male subject made comments about shooting a neighbor's dog and
stated that he had multiple guns inside the residence.
Officers from the Macomb Police Department, the
McDonough County Sheriff's Department, WIU's Office of Public
Safety, and the Illinois State Police arrived on scene and secured a
perimeter around the residence. Contact was made with the male
subject, 31 year old Samuel Cox, and he eventually left the
residence to speak with officers. Cox was taken into custody
at that time. A second male subject, Jared Dixon, also
exited the residence and was taken into custody.
A search of the residence was conducted after Cox
and Dixon were arrested. Officers were unable to locate any
firearms or illegal drugs in the residence. A stolen shopping
cart from a local grocery store was located inside the residence and
recovered.
Cox was charged with Disorderly Conduct,
Resisting/Obstructing a Peace Officer, and Theft Under $500.
Dixon was charged with Obstructing a Peace
Officer and he also had a valid Peoria County warrant for his
arrest.

Drive Sober or
Get Pulled Over
The Macomb Police Department
would like to announce that over the next two weeks its officers
will be conducting extra patrols throughout Macomb as it
participates in the 2011 Labor Day "Drive Sober or Get Pulled
Over" Impaired Driving Crackdown. This is an effort to reduce
these incidences over the Labor Day holiday. The law
enforcement crackdown runs concurrently with a media campaign
that will remind motorists to "Driver Sober or Get Pulled
Over." Funding for this program is provided by the Illinois
Department of Transportation Division of Traffic Safety.
According to data from the
Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and the National
Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the timeframe
between 12:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m. is the deadliest time to be on
Illinois highways. The data also shows this time of night has
the highest percentage of alcohol involvement and the lowest
safety belt usage rate. The Macomb Police Department is
dedicated to the safety of our community. Safety details as
such are designed to increase the awareness of these issues in
our community and to gain voluntary compliance with the motoring
public. The increased enforcement details conducted during
these times raises the perception of getting caught and deters
potential impaired drivers and/or unbuckled drivers. The
combined impaired driving and safety belt enforcement details
will make a further positive impact on reducing serious injuries
and fatalities on our roadways.
The Macomb Police Department
recommends designating a sober driver and not letting friends
and family members drive impaired as just two of several simple
steps to avoid a tragic crash or an arrest for impaired
driving. Other important tips include:
-
Plan ahead. Designate a sober driver before going out and
give that person your keys
-
If
you are impaired call a taxi, use mass transit, or call a
sober friend or family member to get you home safely
-
Promptly report impaired drivers you see on the roadways to
law enforcement
-
Wear your safety belt and make sure all passengers are
buckled up. It is your best defense against an impaired
driver
